Week 18 - Growth Mindset

The focus this week is the same as last. We will be working on smart, efficient hockey. That applies everywhere on the ice. Knowing when and how to attack is an important growth in your hockey development. Wasting unnecessary energy with high-risk, low-reward plays has consequences that escalate as the game goes on. The team with the most mental toughness, physical energy, and least mistakes (especially late in games) is statistically going to win a lot more games.

It is important that you learn the ability to self-reflect. Every player has access to our game videos on HUDL (if you don’t ask your parent or reach out to me). You can learn a lot by watching yourself and understanding where your biggest mistakes are happening. The next step is to be open to feedback and ways to think differently. The move you think looks really cool but never works maybe isn’t the best move. Are you open to trying something different? Not all goals or plays are pretty. Smart, simple hockey wins a lot more games than you might think.

The vast majority of this team appears to be very attentive when being coached. If a coach approaches you in practice, be open to listening. If you don’t understand what is being asked or stated, ask questions or for more clarity. Then go out and apply what you believe you learned. The players that do this the best are making huge steps forward in their growth.

It is worth noting that every coach you have through your hockey years has a different idea about how teams play and how players grow. Hockey can be taught and played in many ways. Embrace the differences. Blend the learning together and see what works for your growth. It will make you a more whole player.

See everyone on the ice!
